Can Shampoo Bars Really Make Your Hair Grow Thicker and Faster?

I have naturally thick hair that I keep long so I can properly test shampoo bars. One of my daughters has my thick hair, but my other daughter has her dad's thin and fine hair.

Sometimes new customers want to know if Aquarian Bath shampoo bars can help hair grow thicker, stronger and faster.  We want to know too, but we are biased. We tend to think that if your hair starts growing better after switching to our shampoo bars, it has more to do with what isn't in our shampoo bars (no SLS, no surfactants, no parabens, no chemical preservatives, no synthetic fragrance) than what is in them. Our way of thinking is that soaps and shampoo aren't really meant to be curative, since they are wash-off products. However if you have been using shampoos with ingredients that have been irritating your scalp and clogging your pores, then you may have been experiencing reduced hair growth. So if you stop using them and switch to shampoo bars, it is possible you may experience improved normal hair growth.

This blog post was inspired by a remarkable story from a customer who wrote the following last week:

I switched to Organic last year and ordered a set of your soap, deodorant, lip gloss and shampoo. The shampoo from you has caused me to have more hair growth all over my head! My boyfriend kept saying I was cutting my hair, because I had all these short pieces everywhere. No, it's new growth at 40 yrs old! its all over my head! I have been using it twice a week since April last year (Sesame Aloe Lavender shampoo) and I will never use anything else ~ S.J. of Indiana 1/23/16

I checked the ingredients of the $73 specialty dandruff shampoo that S.J. was using previously. There were about 50 ingredients, including a few surfactants, so it is hard to say if one or the other ingredients may have been irritating. I also have to wonder if switching your diet to a 100% Organic can improve hair growth also; it was not clear if that was the case also.

It helps us make better formulas and make more informed recommendations to customers.

Do Salt Hair Sprays Work With Shampoo Bars?

Vanilla Lavender Shampoo Bar Soap by Aquarian Bath
Sea Salt Sprays are a trendy product for adding texture without volume to the hair. Similar to ocean swimming they dehydrate the hair somewhat and make it clump together slightly. Do salt hair sprays work with shampoo bars? It depends of the type of shampoo bar. There are two types of shampoo bars. The first is a natural shampoo bar soap, such as Aquarian Bath shampoo bars. These bars contain saponified oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, etc. The second type of shampoo bar is made with surfactants such as SLS. Aquarian Bath does not make this type of shampoo bar. In this blog post you will learn which bars will and will not work with salt hair sprays and why.

Aquarian Bath's hard-water friendly shampoo bar soaps are formulated with saponified oils of Organic coconut, Organic olive oil, shea butter, and castor oil. Usually people with natural hair have very good results with our shampoo bar soaps, so a while back when a customer said their hair was feeling gummy, dull, and lifeless, we suspected that another product was interfering. Usually our natural shampoo bars give hair lots of bounce, volume, and shine. I asked about other other products, and our customer told me that the only other product she used with her hair was a Dead Sea Salt Spray. Ah ha! I knew immediately what the problem was. Dead Sea Salt is mineral rich. Some of these minerals are what is filtered out by using expensive specialty shower filters. These filters prevent soap scum build up in the tub, or ring around the tub, which is a product of natural soaps mixing with hard water. Technically that means Calcium or Magnesium ions mixing with Fatty Acids. The majority of our shampoo bars are formulated carefully to work well with hard water, but adding salt spray to hair freshly washed with natural shampoo bars will gum up the works, so to speak. Soap scum is the last thing you want in your hair! We suggested to the customer who was having problems to try instead to use a diluted vinegar rinse after washing with one of our shampoo bars, or to use a standard surfactant shampoo to clear the salt-soap build up, and to then avoid using salt spray with our shampoo bars for future washes. These were her results: Yay! I mixed up an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)/lavender rinse and sprayed it on my hair after using the neem bar and my hair is finally happy! The bar cured my lifetime scalp itch and the ACV keeps my curls shiny and soft! I will never use synthetic products again!  Great idea!

Some shampoo bars from other companies are not shampoo bar soaps, because they contain a very high concentration (as much as 90%) of surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) instead of saponified oils. Those shampoo bars will work with salt hair sprays because their chemistry is more like a regular shampoo. However, there are two other concerning drawbacks about SLS. First, SLS is often a product of Palm Kernel Oil. This Palm oil is produced in countries where corporations are recklessly destroying rainforest at the expense of endangered species and the climate. The rate of forest destruction is alarming, and it needs to stop. Second, research has shown that people with skin sensitivities may have their skin problems exacerbated from using SLS products. One customer told us that their scalp changed from oily to dry and irritated after using a SLS-based shampoo bars. Another customer with normal scalp said that their scalp itched from the SLS shampoo bar after only one use.

In summary, natural shampoo bars made with saponified oils do not work well with salt sprays due to their particular chemistry while surfactant shampoo bars will. Despite not working well with salt sprays, Aquarian Bath shampoo bars have an advantage over shampoo bars made with SLS. Unlike SLS bars, our bars are made from a high concentration of Organic oils, instead of from rainforest decimating palm oil. Second we have a number of dedicated customers who have switched over to our products, because of their sensitive scalps. We think is a good sign that our products do not worsen the problems of those with skin sensitivities. Check out our website to shop for one of our shampoo bars.

The Best Shampoo Bars to use with Hard Water

Our Key Lime Eucalyptus shampoo bar worked well in hard water conditions.
Thanks so one of our awesome Aquarian Bath customers, I am happy to share our top shampoo bars to use with hard water. Kimberly had initially used one of our shampoo bars (Rose hemp) while on vacation in Florida with great results. Her hair type is long with natural henna-dyed hair. When she returned home and used the same bar, she experienced a build up in her hair. Apparently her city water was exceptionally hard, so much so that the water had a dirty smell. Even some laundry wasn't coming 100% clean, and had the same dirty smell. Hard water is water that has a high mineral content, and some minerals can give an off smell. Kimberly ordered different sample shampoo bars to try out, and I also threw in a 2 or 3 additional sample bars for her to try. I'm thrilled she tested all of the ones she received and provided great feedback for me to share with everyone.

Here are is Kimberly's detailed feedback and special tips for shampooing with hard water:

With hard water you have to use more soap then you would have to with soft or normal water. So two things I started doing are using more shampoo. This seemed to really help and also I started combing my hair as I rinse the shampoo out, in hope that no minerals would get stuck in the tangles. I tried each bar at least once with combing when I rinse and once without combing, and I found the combing did make some difference. What I think worked best for my hair would be Aloe Lavender Rosemary Mint and the Key Lime Eucalyptus. They made my hair very shiny and lay very smooth. The Neem and Vanilla Lavender both worked on my hair but gave me more volume and less shine.

http://www.aquarianbath.com/soap/shampoo-bars-solid-shampoo-hair-soap/shampoo-bars-solid/aloe-shampoo-bar-with-rosemary-lavender-and-spearmint-essential-oils.html
Lavender Rosemary Mint Aloe shampoo bar was the other top pick.

Best results with Hard water:
update 11/7/14 reformulated Tea Tree Eucalytpus shampoo has same formula as Key Lime/Euc
Update 3/15 Carrot Top Shampoo formula now same as Key Lime/Euc

Worst results with Hard Water:
update 11/7/14 other hemp shampoo bars

I think that these results may have something to do with the concentration of Jojoba oil which is used in our formulas, though not all of our bars were tested. The bars that had the best results had no Jojoba, with the exception of Neem, which has only 1 percent Jojoba. The two other bars that gave poor results have a higher concentration of this liquid wax. This was a bit of surprise, because Jojoba is generally considered a luxury oil for hair care. The Rose Hemp bars also are scented with a Bulgarian rose wax, which leaves no residue in normal water.

Do you have experience with hard water and using any of our shampoo bar formulas? We would love to hear your feedback, because as you may have noticed not every bar was tested.  I will post any more relevant feedback about hard water and our other shampoo bar formulas to this blog post.

How do Aquarian Bath Shampoo Bars Stack up to the Competition at Price per oz?

When shopping for products online, it can be hard to get a feel for the size of the item your are buying.  If you haven't tried Aquarian Bath soaps or shampoo bars yet, let me give you a feel for that. I did some comparison shopping with two popular Shampoo bar brands, Lush and J.R. Liggett. When comparing price + shipping of shampoo bars on our website versus these websites we found Aquarian Bath shampoo bars were significantly less expensive per ounce than both Lush and J.R. Liggett on single bar purchases for US addresses.

Lush Shampoo Bar
1.9 oz bar
$11.95 per bar
$6 shipping
Total $17.95
Total price per oz $9.45

J.R. Liggett Shampoo Bar
3.5 oz bar
$6.99 per bar
$7.45 shipping
Total $14.44
Total price per oz $4.23

Aquarian Bath Shampoo Bar
4 - 4.5 oz bar (some variation d/t handmade)
$7.50 per bar suggested retail price
$6.50 special price (usually available unless inventory is low)
$3.11 shipping
Total at suggested retail price $10.61
Total at special price $9.61
Total price per oz at suggested retail price $2.36 - $2.65
Total price per oz at special price $2.14- $2.40

To summarize, we found that Aquarian Bath bars are $6.80- $7.31/oz less expensive than Lush bars and  $1.58- $2.09/oz less expensive than L.R. Liggett bars. You can trust you will be saving money when you shop at Aquarian Bath.

Why shouldn't I use shampoo bars on dry skin?

Our Lemon Vanilla  Shampoo bars have a new look.

We received a very good question today about our shampoo bars.  In our shampoo bar listings, we mention that shampoo bars can also be used as body soaps, unless you have dry skin.  "But aren't these shampoo bars moisturizing?" Yes, they are moisturizing, but Aquarian Bath shampoo bars are specially formulated to leave just the right amount of conditioning (unsaponified oils) for the hair. The skin, especially dry skin, needs more conditioning free oils compared to the hair. A regular body soap would leave too much residue in the hair, because the body soaps have a higher concentration of free (unsaponified) oils. Also bars that we formulate for dry skin have a high percentage of Extra Virgin Olive Oil compared to regular body soaps we formulate for normal or normal to oily skin types. Extra Virgin Olive oil is very moisturizing in a soap, and the skin is better at absorbing excess oils compared to the hair. If we used olive oil in such a high concentration in a shampoo bar in the way that we do for dry skin soaps, there would be way too much oil residue in left in the hair, and the bars would also have too low of a lather for shampooing.

Neem Olive Oil soaps are hand-stamped with a hand-carved Om stamp.
One of our popular soaps for dry skin is our neem-olive oil soap, which includes only these ingredients.  Neem oil is a special ingredient that helps balance problem skin, and it combines well with olive oil for dry problem skin types.  We also use neem in shampoo bar formulas.

4 New Shampoo Bars by Aquarian Bath and How to Use a Shampoo Bar

Coffee Butter Shampoo Bar Vegan Jojoba Formula
I am pleased to announce 4 new shampoo bars from Aquarian Bath made with a slightly modified formula which includes Pesticide Free Golden Jojoba. The formula is nearly the same as my original vegan Aloe Shampoo Bar, but it has Golden Jojoba included instead of Aloe. The difference in feel for your hair is slightly more smoothing, softening, and straightening. The Aloe Shampoo bars tend to give my hair more volume and bounce. Don't worry, I will continue making my Aloe Shampoo Bars for those who love that formula.

My coffee shampoo bar is sure to be a hit. It was made with my new vegan jojoba formulation slightly modified to include highly aromatic coffee butter and a strong coffee brew rather than standard water. These coffee shampoo bars have a light coffee scent.

If you have been waiting for an unscented shampoo bar or have been wanted to try a smaller sized shampoo bar to start, you can now try my Henna infused Shampoo Bar rounds. I have a small number of these bars in stock at the moment. I haven't decided if I will stick with rounds or make regular rectangles with the next batch. What do you think? Do you like round soaps?

Henna Shampoo Bar Vegan Jojoba Formulation

My next shampoo bar isn't vegan but it is the same formula with the addition of Tea Tree and Eucalyptus essential oil together with silk protein and honey. The silk gives the an even greater smoothing quality to the shampoo bar. This bar smells wonderfully herbaceous and refreshing.

Silk-N-Honey Tea Tree Eucalyptus Shampoo Bar with Jojoba

Lastly I have created a fun shampoo bar for the Beer lovers with Guinness Extra Stout. This shampoo bar is unscented. This bar was made with the same vegan jojoba formula, but it contains slightly less free oil compared to the other vegan jojoba shampoo bars. So this might be a good choice for you if you hair tends to normal with a slight tendency towards oiliness.

Extra Stout Vegan Jojoba Shampoo Bar made with North American Guinness Extra Stout. This bar is slightly less conditioning compared to my other vegan jojoba shampoo bars

How does one wash with a shampoo bar?

I wrote previously about transitioning to shampoo bars and a simple treatment to give your hair a fresh start, but what about the basics? Washing with a shampoo bar is pretty simple. First you wet your hair thoroughly, the rub the shampoo bar in a few a patches in your hair. Then work up the lather with your hands. Make sure the lather is worked in through all of your hair and down to your scalp in order give your hair a complete cleaning. Then rinse your hair with fresh water making sure to get out all the shampoo. Rinsing your hair with bath tub water that already has soap mixed in with it will not give you a clean rinse. I wash with my shampoo bars every 2 to 3 days, or more often if I have been getting dirty in the garden or have been working out strenuously.

How to Give Your Hair a Fresh Start or Transitioning to Shampoo Bars

Something that I like to do for my hair once a year or so is a vinegar hair rinse. A vinegar hair rinse is a conditioning treatment suitable for hair that has not been chemically colored. Henna-colored hair is fine. A vinegar rinse helps to remove build up from shampoo and other hair care products, and helps smooth and slightly straighten the hair. I like the bounce that my hair gets from using my bar shampoos, but I recently gave my hair a treatment in between testing new shampoo bar formulas. It was a bit over due, the last time I did it was over 2 years ago. During that time I had been testing a few new shampoo bar formulas, so it was nice to have a fresh start. I suggested this treatment to a customer who was new to shampoo bars and was having trouble with the transition. She really liked the result and I have been meaning to share it. I hope if you try it you like the results. It is very simple:

Mix 2 Tablespoons of Vinegar (Apple Cider Vinegar is best) with 2 cups of warm water. Wet the hair completely in the shower, then pour the rinse completely through the hair. Allow it to sit on the hair for a couple minutes and then rinse with fresh water.

You can have more fun by making an infused herbal vinegar like the one pictured by HerbalMother.com.

Enjoy!

Shampoo Bar Line Expanding: Vote for New Scents

One of my goals for 2012 is to add new varieties of shampoo bars to my line. I have a hemp patchouli shampoo bar in the works, and I am looking for suggestions for scents for more of my Vegan Aloe Shampoo bars. You can also comment with other suggestions, but I am trying to stick with oils that have beneficial properties for hair or scalp. Thanks so much for your votes.

Shampoo Bar Fans.. What do you think?

I ran across an interesting post the other day on Shampoo Bars being good for the environment because they cut down on packaging. But the question the blogger poses is 'but how does your hair look?' If you are a fan of shampoo bars, mine or shampoo bars in general, then why not weigh in on this topic at The Red White and Green, where caring about then environment is patriotic! There are quite a few comments already.
