Tropical Traditions Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Review and Giveaway

Coconut palms in South Beach Miami from my 2010 trip.
I received a jar of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil last month from Tropical Traditions. It was a promotional gift from Tropical Traditions and I was under no obligation to make a review or host a giveaway. However I really was impressed with the company, therefore I'm happy to share about the product and host a giveaway for one of my readers. The packaging of the oil was extremely environmentally conscious. The oil it self comes in a glass jar. Instead of being packed with non-biodegradable styrofoam packing peanuts like so many other products, it is secured in cardboard casing. The shipping box was sealed with paper tape as well, which is something I pay a lot more attention to now that I have switched to using paper tape.

The coconut oil itself is undeodorized and has a sweet pleasant coconut smell. I like it so much I made a new batch of vegan Coconut Lip Balms with it.

Now available at Aquarian Bath
I've also enjoyed using it on popcorn. I even made mayonnaise with it, which is something I had been wanting to try for a long time. Tropical Traditions has a lot of great recipes on their site with videos. Here is their demonstration video for making mayonaisse:

I've not cooked as much with coconut oil as I'd like to, but I've used it as a lotion/massage oil. I have also heard it makes a good personal lubricant for those with sensitive skin (not for use with condoms!)

I was just researching this company when I read your blog. Thank you. My interest is inspired by a friend who has esophageal ulcers.

We keep a jar of coconut oil in the bedroom to use on our skin. It's very helpful to get a tan (built up slowly, of course), which is the body's natural protection from the sun. We keep another jar in the kitchen for cooking. Sometimes I use it for oil-pulling, a way to clean the teeth by swishing it around in the mouth (I rinse three times after).

I use coconut oil in various different ways and absolutely love it. I haven't tried this particular brand, but would like to.

One recipe I enjoy is:

Dark Chocolate and Coconut Treats

Ingredients:

¾ cups Dark Chocolate 73%

½ cups Shredded Unsweetened Coconut

¼ cups Coconut Oil

1 tbsp pure maple syrup or honey (optional)

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Melt chocolate in a small pan over very low heat; you can use a double boiler if you wish and temper the chocolate. Using a small paint brush, coat the bottom and sides of a candy mold.

Place mold in the freezer for 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.

In a small bowl, combine shredded coconut, melted coconut oil and vanilla.

Remove mold from the freezer. Fill chocolate-lined molds with coconut mixture. Paint chocolate over the coconut mixture to cover the bars.

Place in freezer for 10 minutes to harden. Remove from the freezer, turn mold upside down and pop out of the mold. Serve.

I usually use coconut oil on my face but I just found out about Tropical Traditions and I'm super excited to try them out after hearing so many good things about the brand!! Next step is to use it as a hair treatment. If I cooked I know I would use it there too ;)

Using a little here and there accrues health benefits: On skin; daily in stovetop cooking; broiling and baking. My kitties even go for it-- good to prevent or aid with hairballs. Would love to try this extra special coconut oil.

granola!

3 cups rolled oats

2/3 cup almonds, coarsely chopped

1/3 cup macadamia nuts, coarsely chopped

1/3 cup sunflower seeds

1 cup dried sour cherries

1 cup unsweetened coconut chips

pinch of salt

zest of 1 lemon

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon allspice

3/4 cup honey

1/2 cup coconut oil

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg white, beaten

Preheat oven to 325F and line a baking sheet with parchment.

In a large mixing bowl combine oats, nuts, sunflower seeds, cherries, coconut, salt, lemon zest, and spices, toss to combine well.

In a medium saucepan melt together honey and coconut oil, just to combine. Add vanilla, remove from heat and pour over oat mixture, stirring to combine and coat well. Add the egg white and mix to coat well. Spread the mixture onto the baking sheet in an even layer and bake 15 minutes, stir and continue to bake in 10 minute intervals, stirring between each until granola is uniformly golden. Allow to cool completely on the baking sheet before breaking up and storing in an airtight container. If you do not allow it to cool completely the granola will not be chunky, but just as delicious still.

from the hungry girl por vida blog...soooo good!

I'm trying to make a butter using coconut oil, coconut milk, light olive oil and sea salt. We haven't tried it on gluten free bread yet, but it tasted pretty great in my son's rice this evening!
